Reports of Cumberland’s demise have been greatly exaggerated

I am a fan.  I don’t want, or pretend, otherwise.  I can’t say this often enough.  I have no “inside” knowledge or “sources” as such.  I rely only on what is made available to the general public or what those that are “inside” are willing to feed me. As such, I am as surprised as [...]

Rough Riders 1979 Eastern Semi-final

While CFL fans that actually have teams in their community enjoy the Labour Day weekend festivities, why don’t you go grab a beer, sit back and watch a portion of this game?  A friend of mine added it to his Youtube page and I doubt he’d mind if I highlighted it for others.

An oasis, not a mirage

The poll referred to in the article below is not posted anywhere on Capital Region Football.  Why?  ’cause it’s irrelevant.  It asked people whether they wanted an “urban oasis” in Lansdowne Park and lo and behold, people did.  Gasp!! Of course they did.  Hell, I would answer “yes” to that question as well.  That’s why [...]

Ottawa Sun Junior Football Preview

There are times when I look at articles from the 80′s and early 90′s, am just stunned at the level of coverage junior football used to get in Ottawa, and wish things could be that way again. Other times, such as today, I think maybe we’re not that far off.  Chris Stevenson of the Ottawa [...]

My turn to watch the kids!

I am on holidays this week and have been catching up on certain sections of the site.  In particular, I recently obtained four Rough Riders media guides from between 1977 and 1981 and have used the information provided to update and/or correct some of the details in the (former) Ottawa pros section,  with more to [...]

U. of O. loses exhibition game to Bishop’s

I have been away for a few days, hence the lack of updates.  I now have some free time and will be in catch-up mode, starting with the results of the Gee-Gees’ preseason game against Bishop’s.  The following is a press release from the university. OTTAWA – First-team athletes were used sparingly as a flood [...]

Cumberland Jr Varsity team suffers first loss in OVFL final

From Tim Baines, Ottawa Sun.  Again, congratulations Panthers. It was a season full of glory for the Cumberland Panthers junior varsity football team. Ten straight victories without a loss. Just 45 points scored against them. Until yesterday. The Panthers lost yesterday’s OVFL championship game 25-15 to the also unbeaten Mississauga Warriors at Hamilton’s Ivor Wynne [...]

Gee-Gees 2008 Training Camp Preview

This is from the official U. of O. site and it contains something of a surprising Easter egg. The new-look uOttawa Gee-Gees expect up to 116 student-athletes with high hopes of making the cut when the team’s 108th training camp opens Monday next week. Twice daily on-field sessions begin with a bumper crop of transfers [...]

Canadian Football Research Society

Back when this site was specifically dedicated to monitoring the antics of the Ottawa Renegades, among my most frequently visited sites was oursportscentral.com. It gathers newspaper articles about the various “independent and minor” leagues throughout North America, including the Canadian Football League. Since the demise of the Renegades, there has been little reason to visit [...]

Jr Varsity Panthers earn a berth in the OVFL Final!

Chris Stevenson of the Ottawa Sun draws a little attention to the Cumberland Panthers’ victory in the OVFL Jr Varsity playoff yesterday. When I heard about the victory last night, I wondered what kind of coverage it would get so it’s good to see the Sun give it a little attention. When I go find [...]
