Soccer pitch vs football stadium

I post relatively few articles about the status of the Lansdowne Live proposal for a variety of reasons, among them being sheer volume and debatable accuracy. For that reason, I’m grateful to The Sun’s Shane Ross for a breakdown of the bids in today’s edition, though I have to admit that I laughed out loud [...]

Early look at the 2009 ODD schedule

Of course, “card subject to change”. I am not entirely certain as to the status of the Deacon Demons, and as usual they do nothing to clarify it.  I do know, from a Facebook posting, that head coach Jeff Pinck will not be returning to the sideline. Presumably, these are all at 7:30PM as they [...]

Andy McEvoy to be named Sooners head coach

This is showing as a “breaking news” item on the Ottawa Sun sports page.  Thank you for that, Mr Tim Baines. Andy McEvoy has come full circle. The top junior football player in Canada as a member of the Ottawa Sooners in 1984, McEvoy will officially be named the Sooners new head coach at a [...]

CFL Evaluation Camp 2009

You know “next season” is becoming “this season” when events such as these start to creep up. Here are the four Gee-Gees invited to the CFL’s Evaluation Camp, held March 6th to 8th.  I did not notice any Ottawa players playing at any other school this time around. FB Craig Bearss – 6’00″ / 235 [...]

Football Canada speaks its mind

And more power to them.  I received notice that this press conference was taking place yesterday, but worried that it would get little coverage.  The Sun and Citizen are both carrying stories about it, so I’m pleased to have been wrong. Here is The Citizen’s version: Canada’s amateur football establishment has thrown its support behind the [...]

Gee-Gees 13thMan Awards

This was posted on the Gee-Gees official site on February 9th. Even from the bush is Josh Sacobie Gee-Gees football best. The graduated fifth-year senior was selected uOttawa football MVP for a team-record fifth consecutive season as one of nine 13th Man awards to close the book on a 2008 season in which the Gee-Gees [...]

Majority wants city to revitalize Lansdowne

Some highlights from an Ottawa Citizen article in regards to a poll done recently by EKOS Research Associates. The poll, conducted Dec. 11-16 for the development group that wants to bring the Canadian Football League back to Ottawa, suggests there is broad support for both soccer and football. Forty-four per cent of the 871 people [...]

Mark Cohon’s open letter to Ottawa sports fans

I haven’t had a lot of good things to say about the CFL over the past few years, unless it involved local football history, but I have to praise and thank Mark Cohon for yesterday’s open letter to Ottawa fans. First, let’s stash it for posterity… To the people of Ottawa: You and your elected [...]

Bob Stephen passes away

Far too high a percentage of my Rough Riders posts involve a former player passing away. Edit (Feb 10th, 8:30):  I neglected to point out that the article below was from the Ottawa Sun.  An updated version can now be found here. Former Ottawa Rough Riders offensive lineman Bob Stephen died suddenly of a heart [...]

Ottawa Sun poll

Please vote in this poll from the Ottawa Sun as to whether CFL football, soccer or an outdoor concert facility is most important. Why even mention outdoor concerts?  Both bids can accomodate them, can they not? As I write this, CFL football has an 11% lead on soccer. Edit (7:00PM): So much for that lead. [...]
