Earlier in the week, I posted a few links on the main page to various blogs on which the Gee-Gees’ season is previewed.
Below is portion of a Sun article (added to their site just a couple of hours ago) and wouldn’t you know it, it focuses on the change at quarterback from Josh Sacobie to Brad Sinopoli.
I didn’t think it was possible, but there is actually an aspect of local football with which I’m fed up. Thankfully, other position are touched on as well, including one eyebrow-raiser (in italics).

The Gee-Gees are returning solid cores of veterans on both sides of the ball (eight starters on offence and nine on defence). The presence of an experience receiving corps should help Sinopoli. Back are (Cyril) Adjeitey, a second-team OUA all-star, fourth-year receiver Matt Bolduc of Montreal and sophomore Alex Fortier-Labonte from Gatineau.
The backfield could be packed with experience if star running back Davie Mason decides to return for a fourth year. He set the CIS playoff rushing record with 327 yards on 31 carries in a quarter-final win at Guelph, one of two road playoff games the Gee-Gees won after a 4-4 regular season.
Craig Bearss, for his fifth year, and fourth-year man Matt Todd are back with rookies Brendan Gillanders of Ottawa and Franck Ngandui from Montreal looking for playing time.
On defence, the Gee-Gees have second team OUA all-stars Mike Cornell from Hamilton, the fifth-year linebacker, and fourth-year tackle Sebastien Tetreault of Granby, Que., to anchor the unit.
“Tetreault is one of the best interior pass rushers in the CIS and can equally play off the edge,” said Piche.
The defensive backfield has 14 years of experience in fifth-year cornerback Lee Shaver of Ottawa, fourth-year cornerback Chayce Elliott from Burnaby, B.C., and fifth-year defensive back Maxime Bedard of Granby.
The Gee-Gees will open their regular season a week from Sunday against the reigning OUA champion-Western Mustangs at Frank Clair Stadium (5 p.m.)
Uhm…what’s this “if” crap with Mason?
Actually, I read something about this on one of the blogs (I forget which one, otherwise I would give credit). Apparently, Mason has not, at least to that point, reported to camp. It’s not clear whether he intends to play this season.
I seem to recall a similar disappearing act in a previous season. Mason was not seeing the field, but it was not stated as to whether this was due to injury, a benching, or what. He became a strong contributor later in the year but his absence early was something of a mystery.
I have been looking forward to seeing Brendan Gillanders play for the Gee-Gees, but I was also content to wait until his “turn” came up.
