I believe I have finally completed the list of Ottawa area players in the CIS and NCAA.
I love adding to this site, but this is one of my favourite pages to update. Even when this site was Renegades-specific, I tried to think of little things I could add that were not easily found elsewhere. This quick reference page is one of those things. What’s the use of providing information that you can find anywhere else?
I don’t keep numbers (perhaps I should) but the list seemed to grow this year. Admitedly, even though I didn’t say so at the time, it seemed to decrease when I updated it prior to the 2007 season, which made me wonder whether the health of the “scene” was starting to decline.
Judging from how long it took me to do it this time, that apparently is not the case. Concordia continues to have strong Ottawa content, and McGill’s, Saint Mary’s and Toronto’s has increased theirs.
A few random points:
–It’s kind of peculiar to see some hometowns change. I had to remove some players on that basis. One guy went from being from Ottawa to being from…Edmonton. Odd. And at one point I removed a player that was listed as a Kanata boy last year, who apparently became a Kenora boy. Evidently there was some confusion there. Anyway, I can only go by what’s posted on the CIS and team sites so I apologize for mistakes and omissions.
–I spotted a name that I had been wondering about of late. Last year, quarterback Conor Shields left the Ottawa Sooners around mid-season. He had been the 2006 QJFL Player of the Year and his departure came as something of a surprise (to me, anyway). He has turned up on the McGill roster.
–On the flip side, a player that I enjoyed watching last year was Concordia receiver Curtis Cates. He had 16 receptions for 263 yards (a healthy 16.4 average) as a first-year player. He’s no longer on the Stingers roster, however, and I hope to see him pop up on one of my many local teams.
Now the next “project” is to record rosters, at least for the University of Ottawa and the junior teams. I should have a lot of that stuff squirreled away somewhere.
